Our History
Akwaba North East was founded in June 2012 by a group of Ivorians living in the Newcastle upon Tyne region. The word "Akwaba" means "Welcome" in our native tongue, reflecting our commitment to creating a warm and inclusive community for all Ivorians and their partners in the North East of England.

Our Leadership
Our group is governed by three organs: the General Assembly, the Wisemen Panel, and the Executive Committee led by the President.
The supreme decision-making body composed of all members. Meets annually in January and makes major decisions by majority vote.
A panel of three respected members who mediate conflicts, provide guidance, and ensure the group's values are upheld. They also serve as interim leadership when needed.
Led by the President, the Executive Committee manages day-to-day operations, implements decisions, and represents the group externally.

Our Core Values
The principles that guide everything we do as a community
Solidarity
We stand by each other in times of joy and hardship. Through our mutual aid fund and collective support, no member faces life's challenges alone — whether it is a bereavement, a birth, an illness, or a financial emergency.
Respect
We honour the dignity of every individual regardless of background, opinion, or status. Our meetings, events, and discussions are grounded in mutual courtesy, active listening, and the recognition that every voice matters.
Integrity
We are transparent in our governance, finances, and decision-making. Our constitution and internal rules are publicly available, our accounts are audited, and our leaders are accountable to the General Assembly.
Unity
We are one community, one family — Ivorians and their partners united by shared heritage and a common purpose. Our strength lies in our togetherness, celebrating what connects us while embracing the diversity within our membership.
